Channel launched in 150 countries in addition to India

Messaging platform WhatsApp today announced the release of Channels, a one-way broadcast tool for receiving updates on celebrities and organizations. Channels, which has been released in 150 countries including India, features users from the Indian cricket team, actors Katrina Kaif, Diljit Dosanjh, Akshay Kumar, Vijay Deverakonda and many more.
Meta-owned WhatsApp also said that thousands of organizations, artists, sports teams, and leaders have joined the channel. Mark Zuckerberg announced the news on his WhatsApp channel, saying, “I'm excited to introduce you to WhatsApp Channels, a new private way to get updates from the people and organizations you follow. I'm launching this channel to share Meta news and updates. I look forward to connecting with you all around the world.”

In June, Meta first introduced its WhatsApp channel to users in Colombia and Singapore. In July, it expanded the feature to seven more countries. In June, Meta opened up its Instagram channel globally.
Channels are separate from chats, where users choose who they want to follow and who can see them. WhatsApp also states that details such as user numbers and photos will not be shared with the channels you follow. The username and number will only appear in the channel if the user is already in the channel creator's contact list.
Also, anyone can create a channel without revealing their identity. Currently, channels are restricted to celebrities and talents only, but soon anyone will be able to create a channel.

The WhatsApp blog also clarifies that if a user decides not to follow any channels, their existing WhatsApp experience will remain the same. Users will not be added to any channels unless they choose to follow, and will only see updates from the channels they select. WhatsApp will not suggest channels based on a user's personal messaging activity, which remains private and end-to-end encrypted. Users can also easily unfollow channels at any time.
By default, channel notifications are muted.
