Oliver Jackson-Cohen's Netflix hits include 2018's The Haunting of Hill House and 2020's The Haunting of Bly Manor. The two horror series, created by Mike Flanagan, brought the 37-year-old actor a global following he'd never seen before starring in a Netflix original. He's parlayed the success of those series into a film career that's spanned both streaming (2021's The Lost Daughter, also for Netflix) and theatrical hits (Universal's 2020 reinterpretation of The Invisible Man).
But is Jackson-Cohen a star? The actor recently spoke to The Independent, briefly touching on life as a “Netflix-famous” actor, summing it up as star power that never really lasts because you're always moving on to the next star.
“[Being] “It's a funny thing about being Netflix famous,” he says, “you're the most famous person in the world for a while, and then this next show comes along and totally unseats you.”
The turnover of Netflix stars comes and goes fast. Aside from the cast of “Stranger Things,” not many of the streamer's developed talent have maintained the burst of star power that occurs when their titles first debut on the streaming platform. This is perhaps one of the factors behind the deaths of movie stars that many celebrities have been reflecting on recently.
“There are no more movie stars,” Jennifer Aniston declared in her 2022 cover story for Allure magazine.
“I feel like the new generation doesn't have that concept. [of a movie star]”Social media has made people more open and…
Regé-Jean Page was one of Netflix's biggest stars when the first season of Bridgerton blew the world away in December 2020, but his reign has come to an end. That said, he's not so much a believer in movie star power these days.
“Crying about that tragedy is like, 'Are there any good movies?'” Page told Vanity Fair last year about the movie star's death. “I don't know if I would have loved going to the cinema to see the actors. I go to the cinema to see the movies. It's like crying about a rock star sound designer not being around anymore. This department was used to it for a while, and now they're not getting this much attention? There's no point in whining.”
