Today is Election Day in Florida, but many people may not realize it.
Some counties, such as Pinellas, have local candidates on the ballot.
Moreover, Republicans are voting in the party's presidential primary even though former President Donald Trump has secured enough delegates to become the presumptive Republican nominee.
The Florida Democratic Party chose not to hold a presidential primary and elected all state delegates to President Joe Biden.
WMNF News spoke with Becky Rudolph, a new Gulfport resident who voted at City Hall when voting opened Tuesday morning.
She did not vote in the presidential primary, focusing on the Gulfport City Council race between April Thanos and Tom Bixler.
Rudolph said the lack of a primary may have led to fewer Democratic voters voting in local elections.
“That probably happened because I think people don’t necessarily pay attention to local stuff and it gets overlooked a lot.
“We also saw in other states that people were able to protest in the following ways: [voting “uncommitted.”]
“But we were not given the opportunity to show where we were.
“So while it’s disappointing, it’s not surprising.
“Voting local is so important because it affects you the most.”
