House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries scheduled a virtual meeting with top Democratic committee members for Sunday amid growing pressure from his party's caucus over President-elect Joe Biden's candidacy.
CNN reported Friday that Jeffries convened the group as a growing number of Democrats call for Biden to reconsider his reelection campaign and some even call for him to step down.
The White House is struggling with the fallout from Biden's poor performance at last month's CNN presidential debate, rekindling questions about his mental state and ability to serve another term. Biden on Friday said he “completely denies” dropping out of the 2024 race and insisted in an ABC News interview that he can beat former President Donald Trump in November.
Five House Democrats have called on Biden to resign: Reps. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Raul Grijalva of Arizona, Angie Craig of Minnesota and Mike Quigley of Illinois.
Meanwhile, Virginia Sen. Mark Warner believes it's time for Biden to stop campaigning and is trying to rally Democratic senators together, a source familiar with the senator's efforts told CNN.
The meeting between Warner and his colleagues is expected to take place on Monday, according to a source familiar with the plans.
