There are now 99 days until the 2024 presidential election. A historic month of political realignment has transformed the race. Vice President Kamala Harris' favorability ratings are on the rise, and polls show multiple paths to victory. President Trump responded to Harris' momentum over the weekend with a series of personal attacks, calling her “evil,” mocking her laugh and the pronunciation of her name, and saying that if Harris wins in November, “the American Dream is dead.” The vice president denied her opponent's “big lies” and challenged her to a debate. President Trump's selection of Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate has also set the tone for the race, with Democrats closely watching the vetting process for Harris in the coming days and weeks.
The Park Fire, the seventh largest wildfire in California history, has burned more than 360,000 acres, an area larger than the city of Phoenix. According to Cal Fire, the fire has destroyed more than 100 structures and is threatening thousands more. As of early today, the fire was 12% contained, but evacuation warnings or orders remain in place in Butte, Tehama, Plumas and Shasta counties. Weather forecasts for the Northwest are calling for lighter winds in the region than in recent days, giving firefighters some optimism about slowing the fire's progress. In Oregon, the Darke Fire is the largest wildfire in the state, burning more than 288,000 acres. The fire has injured three people and destroyed four homes. Local officials say the fire is 49% contained.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes rocked Gaza with another weekend of heavy bombardment. Iowa has a tough abortion law in effect today that bans most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, roughly the time when a fetal heartbeat can be detected or before many women even know they're pregnant. The law was passed last year but a judge blocked it from going into effect. Iowa is one of roughly two dozen states that have banned or restricted abortion procedures since the Supreme Court eliminated the constitutional right to abortion nationwide in June 2022 in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.
