As Senegal approaches the pivotal presidential elections on March 24, 2024, Article 19 requires authorities to protect human rights, especially freedom of expression, which is fundamental to the integrity of democracy. We underline the critical importance of protecting these fundamental rights during electoral processes in order to ensure a fair, transparent and inclusive democratic transition.
“Preparations for the March 24 elections have been marred by violations of freedom of expression and escalating human rights abuses,” said Alfred Nkuru Brakari, Article 19 Regional Director for Senegal and West Africa. “We reiterate the responsibility of the authorities to protect fundamental freedoms and urge everyone to ensure that the remaining election campaign is carried out in the utmost peace, respecting different opinions, embracing tolerance and diversity. It is essential that the media is given access to reliable information so that they can play their important role in providing accurate coverage of the vote.

As candidates campaign for the presidential election, widespread incidents of violence have been observed in various cities and regions, including Dakar, Mbour, and Kafrin. Clashes between political supporters resulted in the destruction of public and private property, including campaign cars.
In the face of such violence and tensions, it is imperative that governments fulfill their obligations to protect and promote a safe environment for candidates and the public to conduct fair and peaceful elections.
