Michigan has long been considered the automotive capital of the United States, but how does it position itself in the future?
Did you know that Michigan's auto manufacturing jobs grew 7 percent from 2014 to 2018, and $12 billion in corporate-funded automotive research and development takes place here each year?
Automotive industry members of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce's MICHauto Group will hold their annual meeting Tuesday at the Detroit Athletic Club to get an update on key industry topics and receive a copy of the 2019 “Michigan is Automobility” report.
Below are some highlights from the report, which includes data from dozens of sources and provides the job and investment facts listed above.
- From 2016 to 2018, three metro Detroit counties experienced the highest growth rates in the nation for new manufacturing jobs, with Macomb County ranking first, Wayne County ranking 20th, and Oakland County ranking 28th.
- In 2018, 17% of U.S. auto production and 11% of North American auto production took place in Michigan, with 22 vehicle models assembled there that year.
- Michigan ranks first in terms of operations, with 11 connected vehicle deployment projects funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
- Michigan is the top U.S. state for transportation equipment exports.
- Automakers and suppliers have invested $29 billion in Michigan since 2009, more than three times as much as any other state.
