If you think back to your childhood (or even just a few years ago), it's clear that many things in life that were once available to the masses have become very expensive.
Recently, I shared a list of some things that have been nearly ruined by the rich. And as it turns out, the BuzzFeed community had a lot to say and a lot to share. So here we have an even number more An aspect of life that the wealthy have all but destroyed for the rest of us.
1.
“Cereal! It used to be cheap children's food. Now, where I live, it costs six or seven dollars a box.”
2.
“Camping. Nowadays, we call “glamping'' the experience of interacting with the outdoors using large-screen TVs and large refrigerators.”
3.
“Brands like Wrangler and Levi's. Prices have gone up, but overall quality has gone down quite a bit. When I was in high school, you could buy a pair of Levi's for about $10, but they didn't last until they really fell apart. But with the last one, it started pilling right after I bought it, and now it's hard to find clothes that don't pill.
Four.
“Buying a house. My grandparents bought a house on Maui in the 1950s for less than $50,000. That same house, an original house that is more than 70 years old, has barely been renovated since then. , now worth over a million dollars. And did I mention it's on a small lot in a ditch?!”
Five.
“Politics. The amount of money spent on political campaigns is ridiculous. It could run several small countries for a year. There should be a limit on how much each political party can spend on campaigns.”
6.
“Concerts. These days you can't even buy beer at a concert for the price of a general admission ticket. And people are still paying exorbitant prices!”
7.
“Avocado. My grandfather still calls avocado 'poor man's butter' from his childhood in California. Now he can't believe avocado is such an expensive, luxurious food. .”
8.
“Cheap cuts of meat. Gone are the days when pork belly, lamb shanks and oxtail were affordable. Thanks to a TV chef, we've reduced the prices of these once-bargain foods in one episode. I was able to quadruple it at you, Jamie Oliver!
9.
“Bikes. Not only are they expensive, they're always out of stock now. My husband and I tried to buy a few bikes about a year ago and were shocked at how hard they were to find. If you order six months in advance, there was nothing special about it.”
Ten.
“New York City. It's really impossible to live here now. The city has become very expensive.”
11.
“College education. It used to be affordable even without aid. Now tuition costs have soared far above the rate of inflation, and only the very rich can really afford it.”
12.
“It's about going to the theater. It's so expensive now. It used to be that you and your friends could buy a ticket and have dinner first. Nowadays, the price of a single theater ticket has gone down from what it used to be. That's about as much as a nice meal out would cost for four people. And don't even get me started on the cost of extras while you're at the theater. Especially the drinks.”
13.
“The Internet. We used to know that the only people online were people who genuinely wanted to participate in a community or subculture. Then the wealthy realized that, and now the Internet is all about advertising and subscriptions.” Now only 'fees and data collection. ”
14.
“Live sporting events. A fun day of watching an NFL game with friends costs about $500. Or you can watch it on your big screen TV at home, which gives you even better commentary than the game itself. I get that angle. I'm going to watch half of it on a monitor anyway, but I don't feel like going to any sporting events anymore unless I can get free tickets.”
15.
“Airbnb as a whole. It used to be a very accessible way to rent just one no-frills room for $30 or an entire home for much less. The company has since turned the dollar sign on its head. I saw it. Now it's better to stay in a hotel because it's not only cheaper, but also more hassle.”
16.
“Cars. Nowadays, wealthy people can pay $65,000 for a BMW, Mercedes, or Audi, but it's impossible to buy a halfway new car for less than $30,000.”
17.
“Thrifting. The popularity of thrifting has really pissed me off over the years as the rich have discovered it. Prices at thrift stores have gone up, making it difficult for people who just buy clothes there. Plus, I see people showing off what they buy at thrift stores and flea markets and selling their finds at 300% markups.
18.
“My hobby is skiing. I'm from Denver and I grew up skiing at least once a month every winter. It was very affordable, but now my kids will never learn. It's going to cost over a thousand dollars.'' Going skiing for a day as a family of four is really ridiculous. ”
19.
“Coffee. It used to be cheap, and when you ordered it you only had two choices: regular or decaf. It was a blue-collar, working man's drink…it was an office worker's drink that you could easily buy. Nowadays. Coffee is very popular.
20.
“Geek paraphernalia like Star Wars and Marvel stuff (action figures, comic books, etc.). These collectibles were once a fun hobby for kids and kind-hearted kids. Now they're all It is bought almost exclusively by wealthy and enthusiastic speculators for profit. ”
twenty one.
“Housing. In the past, people only bought houses if they were willing to live there. Now we have wealthy people who are looking to invest in real estate. So wealthy people are buying all the affordable housing. They hoard them, drive up prices, and create scarcity.” ”
twenty two.
“Video games. It used to be that you could find used games and consoles for practically nothing. Now they're all collector items.”
twenty three.
“Yachting. It used to be that a worker's salary could get you a decent day yacht with enough cabin space and amenities to live on board for a long weekend, maybe a week (I (I'm talking about something like the McGregor 26) Now people don't just build yachts anymore; they basically build expensive, over-designed yachts.
twenty four.
“Public beaches. The wet sand parts of all beaches are accessible to the public…but the dry sand can be owned. And some wealthy people with property on the beach hire private security guards to patrol “their” beaches. ”
twenty five.
“The land was once home to kitschy amusement parks, campgrounds, picnic areas, fishing holes, campgrounds, miniature golf and other family fun spots. Today, most of the land is unsuitable for such simple pleasures. Too valuable. Many of these places are now businesses. Parks, high-rise apartments, rows of restaurants.
26.
“Farmers Markets. The farmers market in my town is now basically an outdoor grocery store and no longer a way to save money buying local produce. Prices are comparable to Whole Foods. Similarly, there are only a few products that seem to be of good quality.” ”
27.
“Lobster. This shellfish was once thought of as the 'cockroach of the sea' and was mainly fed to prisoners. Look at the price of lobster after the wealthy learned it was delicious.”
So what else have the wealthy ruined for the rest of society? Tell us in the comments.
