A recent study from the University of Glasgow found that people judge whether a person is rich or poor based on the shape of their face.
That's right, according to researchers, your face shape can influence what people think about your wealth and background.
Participants in this study consisted of 30 young Caucasian native English speakers with an average age of 22 years.
Participants looked at a 3D model of a face and were asked to judge their wealth and social status. They also determined whether the person was competent, warm, dominant, and trustworthy.
The study also found that faces perceived as “wealthy” were perceived as more trustworthy, competent, and honest. These facial features include chiseled features, raised eyebrows, and rosy cheeks.
A “bad” face, on the other hand, has lowered eyebrows, a shorter chin, and a cooler skin tone, making it look cold and untrustworthy.
According to the study's lead author, Dr Thora Bjornsdottir, this type of judgment based solely on appearance can have long-term effects on individuals.
She says, “People considered to be of high and low social class are often judged to have favorable or unfavorable characteristics, respectively.
“Such judgments, formed even from facial appearance alone, can have serious consequences, including disadvantaging those perceived to be of lower social class.
“Our impressions of others can lead to certain advantages or disadvantages for that person.
Professor Rachel Jack said: “These findings are not only valuable for advancing our understanding of core social cognitive theories, but also have the potential to inform future interventions aimed at interrupting biased perceptions. “There is,” he said.
