GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Loud music, liquor bottles thrown in the trash, and more at the Greensboro Shopping Center where Electric Tequila, a bar and grill that operated like a nightclub, was located. The chaotic night, which even included a fight, ended.
Local business owners said they complained for months about Electric Tequila but received no real resolution until a large brawl broke out and shots were fired the first weekend in November. ing.
The door is securely locked and everything is tidied up. The facility was shut down just days after the November shooting after the city threatened to list it as a nuisance property. Since then, the situation in the region has improved dramatically.
Four months ago, a disagreement at the former club led to a shootout that left two people injured and cars and businesses damaged.
It's quiet today.
“It's been smooth sailing since they've been gone. We're really happy,” said Blake McKinney, owner of McKinney Saw & Vac, next door to Electric Tequila.
The day after the November shooting, McKinney visited her garment factory and found bullet holes in her family's store.
He replaced the pane of glass, but left two reminders of that night in place. He says the area is safer now that Electric Tequila is closed.
“The problem started when they came in,” he said.
Electric Tequila had 46 police calls in 2023. The shutters were closed, so I checked the address records. Greensboro officers have only been called once since being shut down for reports of suspicious activity.
Mr McKinney said the area was not an appropriate location for the club and it should probably only be allowed in certain areas of the city.
Following the news of the March 8th shooting at Culture Lounge, he supports stricter regulations on where clubs operate.
“I hope they look into these areas and try to fix it like how they fixed this situation,” he said.
