Masu. He has worked consistently as the face of nightlife and culture for the past 15 years, spanning his blog house culture and electronic music scene in LA in the mid-'80s, streetwear events at the height of the Fairfax golden era, and New York City. My grandmother is my mother's mother. She raised me after school. I speak Korean fluently because it was the only way I could talk to my grandma. My whole family treats me like a black sheep because I'm not a doctor. My family includes police officers, lawyers, and judges. And they're like, “Oh, this mom is going to a French rave again.” I'm not a serious person. My grandmother was always cool about it. She passed away a few years ago. I tag her on Instagram. Grandmother is “” in Korean.halmoni” All the kids on the internet knew about my grandmother. They come up to me at raves and say, “How are you doing?'' halmoni? ”
This photo was taken at the home of Kelly Wearstler, the world's greatest interior designer. It was a Spotify event. My strength, what I'm good at, is making people smile back at me in front of the camera. And Nigo in this photo [and Pharrell are] A stone-like face. Still they took photos for me and I was excited to see two legends stuck together in history. (And to be fair, that's teeth Nigo's smile)
I went to Japan with Lee [Spielman] — He has a brand called Babylon LA and is in a band called Trash Talk. I first encountered Verdi through Mr. Lee a long time ago. I encountered Skrillex at this place called the Trump Room, which no longer exists because it has been shut down. It was this ornate bar, a legendary bar with gold-plated mirrors and tables. Random people hang out. Skrillex he was in town for EDC Tokyo. We're just having random drinks in this bar that no longer exists in Japan, not knowing we're all there at the same time. They all come from different worlds, but we can see that they all get along through that connective tissue. I realized that everyone in that photo had the same aspirations and we are all friends now.
This was at the soft opening of the Babylon LA store in Hollywood. The end of the new coronavirus. That's our friend Erol [Chatham], DJ, actor, member of Blondie Beach. He was part of a “loitering unit” with Tyler. [, the Creator]. He does some acting work. I was like, “Yeah, let me take a picture of you guys.” We get a glimpse of how things are going during the coronavirus pandemic, and we get a glimpse of how shy Tyler is. But since I've met him so many times, he's pretty open to me taking pictures. A little glimpse into a snapshot of when it was in history for us.
I became friends with Sony [Lee], the author of “Beef”. I heard the rumors and watched the trailer on Netflix. When he got the call that he was going to do a premiere party in Hollywood, the first thing he did was call me and say, “Hey, Glenn, you've got to be the one taking the picture, because you're the guy.'' I said it. We talked about being both Korean-American and how this was like the Met Gala for Asia. They are winners in their own right. And it's great to see the winners matched with Asian winners.
We went to Burger Road to meet and eat. It was one of those cute, wholesome moments with Spunto that shows you that he's more than just a gangster. I always said to Spanto: “I'm your least favorite sidekick, is that cool?” Spanto was guilty of being a fool whenever he played with me.
I was photographing a boat party for this exhibition “Man/Woman”.Anwar [Carrots] He was in Paris with his newborn baby. Everyone's like, “He created Carrot!” He's also a really great father. It was a global family moment. Taking a baby to Fashion Week is tough, but it's a real challenge. That's G.
That day, I became friends with Miguel. He works with my friend Sophie McNeil, and she brought Miguel to this event downtown. I think it was All My Friends Music Festival. We were just getting along. He is a man who naturally became friends. And now when I see him, we are always excited to see each other. In that photo, Miguel is holding my video camera. I was filming with a video camera all day.
I've been going to A Club Called Rhonda since about 2008. They think he is one of the most genuine parties. It has the spirit of a Studio 54-like club and feels like a safe space.
They are Estevan Oriol, Uncle Pauly, and the Alchemist.we were there [Born X Raised’s] Sadie Hawkins. You can see how crazy we are. You can see it in Esteban's eyes. These guys are modest idiots. They always pose hard: the alchemist's mean mug, Estevan's mean mug. It's a very honest night. Paulie is my son. Estevan is one of my photography legends. I'm just an extension of what he's doing in other areas.
I think it was a random party that the Hypebeast had at Berrick's in Los Angeles, and all I remember was, “Oh, Virgil is playing. Guillaume. [Berg] I'm here, I'm sick.heron [Preston] I'm playing. ” I was struck by the three brothers who are always seen in the fashion world. The funniest part was when they were DJing — remember the kid in the backpack at Katy Perry's performance? Right after this photo was taken, the kid in the backpack was dancing. while kicking a beer in my face. Typical Glenn ass moment.
james [Blake] I started a series called CMYK with the folks at A Club Called Rhonda in LA. To take pictures of someone like James Blake, who is quite reserved and cautious…this was after I had taken some of his CMYK and he got more comfortable with me. That's how I usually do it. This photo of him and his friend Steve Lacey feels so cozy.
Kaytranada's photo was taken when she went to take a photo at a festival. [from Golden Voice] In San Francisco, it's called Portola. It was after hours, after he had played that day. I have known Kaytranada for a long time. He actually watched my videos before he wanted to be his DJ, and he said to me once: [of people DJing] I captured this cheeky moment of Kaytra. He was just a kid I knew, and now he's one of the most stylish people ever. It feels more like a magazine shoot than a casual after-hours shoot.
That was right after Kobe passed away. This is what I thought. “We have to go.'' We have to be there for LA.'' I took a picture of this kid. This is the next generation of people who respect Kobe even though they've never seen him. We can see that the impact Kobe had on LA beyond her generation will last forever.
