Who is Ebuzone?
Evzone is an elite Greek soldier with a rich history. He was originally a light infantry and mountain unit within the Greek army. Today, the term specifically refers to members of the Presidential Guard, a ceremonial unit stationed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens' Syntagma Square in front of the Greek Parliament.
Although their mission is primarily ceremonial, these Evzones are all carefully selected volunteers from the Greek infantry corps. Interestingly, his potential Evzone was identified early in basic training and the minimum height requirement is his staggering 1.95 meters (6'5″).
Evzone is easily recognized by its distinctive uniform. Its roots go back to the clothing worn by the Krefts, Greek resistance fighters who fought against the Ottoman occupation. The most notable feature of this uniform is the fustanella, a garment that resembles a kilt. This distinctive attire made Evzones particularly popular among international audiences as an image of a Greek soldier.
