(NBC, KYMA/KECY) – Independent presidential candidate Cornel West has named him his running mate. West announced professor and activist Melina Abdullah as his running mate in a radio interview Wednesday.
Abdullah is a professor of Pan-African studies at California State University, Los Angeles, and a leader in the Black Lives Matter movement.
In his announcement, West praised Abdullah's commitment to “empowering poor and working people” and emphasized the importance of him being the only black ticket in this year's presidential race.
Abdullah wrote in a post to X: “My spirits are high!!! I'm so honored to do this.” [Cornel West’s] Vice presidential candidate. Let's do it! ! ! ! ! “
Mr. West is pushing for voting access in states across the country in a long-term campaign.
Although the campaign's polls have it in the low single digits, it could have a major impact on the close 2024 election between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
