I would like to thank all of the voters in the Rhode Island Republican presidential primary who recently voted for me. I received 759 votes for State Representative Nikki R. Haley. In my election as a delegate, I would like to commend Mr. Preston W. Woodward of Westerly, who encouraged me to run for office. He received 5,074 votes for former President Donald J. Trump's statewide delegate nomination. Mr. Preston is arguably the youngest delegate candidate to run and win, with 4,019 votes cast at the polling place. mail-in voting, 444; Former state Rep. Justin Price of Richmond will ultimately be elected as a Trump delegate from the 2nd Congressional District. His number of votes in the 2nd constituency was 3,770 for him, and the breakdown of the voting stations was 3,078 for him. Mail-in voting, 107; Statewide, former President Donald J. Trump received 10,898 votes, or 83.7 percent, with 8,510 polling places. mail, 1,026; and early voting, 1,362. and Nikki R. Haley received 10.05 percent from 1,371 polling places. email, 236; and early voting, 242.
These results used are from the Rhode Island State Board of Elections website as of Friday, April 5th. I have attended multiple Republican National Conventions as a guest or alternate delegate. I have never been that representative. The first time I attended as a guest was in 1988 in New Orleans, Louisiana. My first appearance as an alternate delegate was in 1992 in Houston, Texas. The Republican National Convention will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in July. Several other local Westerly-Charijo delegate candidates ran for delegate positions in the recent primaries.
According to Hopkinton election results, former President Donald J. Trump received 184 votes, 92%, and Nikki R. Haley received 9 votes, 4.5%. Other votes were cast for other candidates, noncommittals, or write-ins. I ran as a statewide Haley delegate and got his 33 votes in Hopkinton. They ran as Trump delegate candidates, but I voted for Woodward and Price.
Finally, participating in the process, win or lose, is important for democracy. Regardless of what you can say about Republicans, unlike Democrats, the only delegates on the Republican side guaranteed to have voting rights at the national convention are the state party chairman and two national committee members. Democrats are more restrictive in allowing voters to choose delegates to their conventions. Additionally, in primaries you can only vote for delegate candidates based on the president's choice.
In response to our local Chariho School District Superintendent Gina Pickard, her letter of Saturday, April 6, “The facts speak for Chariho's fiscal responsibility,'' is highly misleading. She says the school committee only manages the school budget, which is correct. But she conveniently ignores the fact that, unlike in North Providence, where she serves on the school committee, the local town council can approve the final amount of the school budget. Local school district town councils do not have the institutional privilege to formally approve or reject local school budgets. Too bad she left that fact out! I'm not going to start my desire to do management research outside of the school district!
