Boise, Idaho (KIFI) – An American Falls teacher is one of five dedicated elementary math and science teachers selected as a state finalist for the National Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teacher Award (PAEMST).
Candidates from Idaho will compete against candidates from across the country to be recognized as national PAEMST winners. This prestigious award is considered one of the nation's highest honors for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators.
“This award shines a light on Idaho educators who have gone above and beyond in opening STEM doors to our youngest learners,” said Public Instruction Superintendent Debbie Critchfield. said. “These outstanding instructors have created a space where students can explore his STEM topics with comfort and curiosity. PAEMST awards are awarded alternately between secondary and elementary school teachers. This year's finalists are:
Math:
- Amanda Holland – 2nd grade, Washington Elementary School, Boise School District
- Justin Pickens – Boise School District Maple Grove Elementary School 6th grade
- Tamara McMorrow – Kuna School District Indian Creek Elementary School 1st and 2nd grade.
Science:
- Jeffrey Blauer – Hillcrest Elementary School, 2nd Grade Dual Immersion, American Falls School District.
- Gina Kwid – Galileo STEM Academy, West Ada School District 2nd Grade
Awards are given to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teachers in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Department of Defense Educational Activity Schools, and U.S. territories. Winners are selected based on their content knowledge and ability to motivate and enable continued student success.
Since the program's inception, more than 5,200 teachers have been recognized for their dedication to quality STEM education.
Candidates who advance to the national competition will be recognized by the White House and receive a paid trip to Washington, D.C., a certificate signed by the president, and a $10,000 prize from the National Science Foundation. The national winner will be announced by the White House this summer.
The nomination process for the next PAEMST cycle will begin this fall to honor secondary school teachers. Anyone, including principals, teachers, parents, students, and the general public, is encouraged to nominate her STEM teacher to teach her grades 7 through 12 in the 2024-2025 school year. Teachers can also apply for awards directly using the application on the PAEMST website.
