Kenyan President William Ruto on Saturday praised the establishment of a Presidential Transition Council in gang-infested Haiti.
“I welcome the formal Decree establishing the Presidential Transition Council (PTC) of the Republic of Haiti. This is a demonstration of the collective courage and extraordinary sacrifice of the people of the United States,” President Ruto said in a statement published in X.
He also suggested that the Transitional Council move quickly to appoint a prime minister and cabinet.
He said Kenya is confident that the Caribbean country's new political leadership will lay a strong foundation to resolve Haiti's ongoing gang crisis.
“Restoring security will bring about a political transition for the Haitian people and bring about sustainable peace and development. We are ready to contribute within the stated framework,” Foreign Minister Ruto said on Saturday.
Gang violence in Haiti has left 1,554 people dead so far this year, with dozens lynched by so-called self-defense brigades, the United Nations Human Rights Office said earlier.
