SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (KELO) — Family-owned businesses are considered the heart and soul of cities across America. That's why it's important to help them stay in business.
At the Hilton Garden Inn downtown, people filled the room for the 32nd annual Family Business Conference.
“We have people from 16 states participating, small businesses, large corporations, businesses of all sizes in every industry. The common thread between them is that they are all in business with their families. That is,” said Stephanie Larscheid, executive director of the Family Business Association.
The event, which featured speakers like Duck Dynasty's Willie Robertson, sold out several months ago.
“All five of us have been attending the conference for about five to seven years,” said Nikki Nelson, an attendee from North Dakota.
Nikki Nelson is the second generation of her family's business in North Dakota. This conference will give her skills that will help her carry on the legacy of her parents.
“I think everyone would feel like a failure if they couldn't keep going. And we all want it to be a success, as this is our biggest word.” I hope we do,” Nelson said.
The conference also helps family businesses connect and support each other.
“When you're in a family business, you often feel isolated and alone, and you don't have anyone to talk to about business ownership or business with your siblings or your parents or your children. This is a community to help you do that,” said Larscheid.
We help businesses across five states stay family-owned and “family.”
