IRVING — The third annual Invitational Celebrity Classic at Las Colinas Country Club begins this weekend, with former Dallas Cowboy Tony Romo looking to defend his title.
Known as one of the most avid golfers in professional sports, the former quarterback turned NFL broadcaster has competed in the tournament every year since its inception, and the event continues to grow in profile throughout the sports world. I'm looking forward to defending that crown.
“This event is becoming more of an event that you just put on your calendar and book,” Romo said during a media conference Thursday before teeing off for the first round. “We knew that before it even started, and I think that's a testament to everyone running this tournament, because it's been done so well and there's so many fans and so many excited people. It's a really fun experience.”
Romo is looking to repeat as champion in the amateur division of the pro-am, with an improving tournament field that includes former golfers Annika Sorenstam and Blair O'Neal, as well as many other prominent athletes in the NFL. I know that very well. NBA, MLB, NHL, and other TV celebrities.
“The talent is much better than it was when we started,” Romo added. “You have the usual suspects, but I think right now we have eight, 10, 12 guys who can win consistently and have good weekends. … I think that’s good for the game. … This is a major I feel like that.”
Sorenstam also plays in the tournament every year and said what she likes about playing in the event, which combines PGA Tour Champion players with celebrity participants.
“I'm happy to be back,” she told the media after Thursday's round. “I always appreciate the invitation. It's a fun event in a lot of ways. It's fun to play with the big names. It's fun to play with the champions and it's fun just to be here in Dallas.”
The 2024 Invitational Celebrity Classic officially kicks off on Thursday and will run throughout the weekend. Romo is paired with Justin Leonard, while Sorenstam is paired with Scott Dunlap.
