Outgoing President Mohamed Ould Ghazani, 67, has not yet announced his candidacy, but is expected to be the clear favorite in the election.
Ghazouani has been at the helm of the vast West African country since 2019, bringing stability to the Sahel region in the face of rising jihadism.
He has prioritized fighting poverty after the coronavirus pandemic and war in Ukraine caused an economic downturn.
Last year, his party El-Insaf won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections, winning 107 of the 176 seats in parliament, far ahead of the Islamist party Tewasoul, which won 11 seats.
