President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit town next Thursday to celebrate federal funding for the innovative Micron project in Clay. These types of visits require heavy police presence and manpower, posing a challenge for local law enforcement agencies, which have been thrown into turmoil by the deaths of two officers.
Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Husock and Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen were killed Sunday in a shooting “ambush” in Salina. As officials have noted, comrades have not had the opportunity to mourn and are continuing to serve while making funeral plans. Jensen is scheduled to be buried in his hometown of Rome on Saturday. Husock's funeral will be held on Monday, and thousands of people are expected to come to the NYS Fairgrounds to pay his respects.
President Biden is expected to be sworn in on Thursday, although the White House has not released details. This week, the federal government announced it would give the company $6.1 billion in grants to start operations at Clay's manufacturing sites as part of the CHIPS & Science Act. President Biden visited Syracuse in October 2027 to celebrate the initial announcement of that project.
Central China has heard from local police that a planned visit next week will be postponed to allow officers and first responders time to recover from the grief and exhaustion following the killings and funeral of two police officers. We are conducting a hearing. CNY Central has reached out to multiple local, state and federal officials, but so far received no response from Republicans until Friday night.
“As the President knows, our community is still reeling from last week's tragedy. We lost two heroes in the line of duty,” said Congressman Brandon Williams, who represents Onondaga, Oneida and Madison counties. “We lost it. The subsidies that the president is trying to promote are worth celebrating.” But that will have to wait until local law enforcement officials have time to properly memorialize. I fully support local police in calling for a postponement of the President's trip. ”
“Our community is saddened by the tragic deaths of Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen and Onondaga Sheriff's Office Lt. Michael Husock,” said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who represents parts of Oswego County and all of Cayuga County. I continue to mourn. The brave men and women of the Syracuse Police Department and Onondaga Sheriff's Office should not be burdened by the president's visit after last week's tragedy. We stand with them in opposing this wrong and cruel act by the Biden administration. Biden should reschedule this visit and give our community a chance to grieve.”
Similar sentiments were shared by MP Elise Stefanik and MP Nick Langworthy.
CNY Central also reached out to Syracuse's mayor, police chief, Onondaga County Executive and Micron leaders to ask if there have been discussions with the Biden administration about possibly postponing the visit, although it has not yet been officially announced. Not confirmed.
