On April 15, a 51-year-old New Bedford woman was struck and killed on a freeway in Westport after getting out of her car, Massachusetts State Police said. According to MSP, a 2010 Ford Fusion traveling eastbound on Interstate 195 struck a woman who was traveling on foot in her right lane.
Change is in store as the historic Capitol Theater evolves into a neighborhood center that meets the needs of diverse groups in the community. It will be renovated and transformed into six affordable rental apartments, as well as commercial space to house small businesses and medical and neighborhood services.

Once a community staple, the Bijou Theater has been closed for more than 15 years, slowly decaying into non-existence and disrepair. Julio Barboza saw the potential in this historic building and brought it back to life.
The Bijou Theater building includes 15 one-bedroom apartments and three retail spaces and is currently fully renovated and occupied. The apartments will provide housing for elderly veterans and those who were previously homeless.

Arthur “Pooch” Tavares, a member of the iconic music group Tavares, has died.
His younger brother, Perry Lee “Tiny” Tavares, posted a memorial photo on his Facebook page on April 17 with the message, “I miss what we had.”
It was just over a week ago that the New Bedford City Council met to discuss the dedication of Tavares Brothers Way, a street honoring the brothers and their legacy.

New Bedford Public Schools is seeking your input on what to name the district's yet-to-be-built South End Elementary School.
The school is expected to be completed in 2026 and will replace the aging James B. Condon and John B. DeVares elementary schools in the South End. The proposed site is the site of the former Goodyear factory at 651 Orchard Street.

The Black Whale has officially opened its newly renovated outdoor patio.
The patio addition, which had a soft opening on April 11, was a long-awaited project for the restaurant, aimed at enhancing the three pillars of its business: food, service and atmosphere.
Black Whale also added multiple heating systems to the patio to ensure guests can dine comfortably most of the year.
