Jakarta. The Constitutional Court began reading its verdict in the presidential election dispute on Monday morning, and Chief Justice Suhartoyo declared the hearing open to the public.
Thousands of security personnel from the police and military were deployed to secure the area just a few hundred meters from Jakarta's National Palace.
“We will continue reading the judgment without interruption,” Suhartoyo said.
“The judge will present the judgment orally, but other relevant details will be considered an integral part of the judgment,” Suhartoyo added.
The hearing will determine the legitimacy of Prabowo Subianto's overwhelming victory in the February 14 election. The defeated candidates, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, petitioned the court to annul the election results and order a new vote.
They alleged widespread election fraud and questioned the legitimacy of Gibran Rakabumin Raka's candidacy as Prabowo's running mate. Both Mr. Anis and Mr. Ganjar have called for the disqualification of Mr. Prabowo and Mr. Gibran in the event of a new election.
Mr. Anis and Mr. Ganjar arrived at the courthouse early in the morning, along with their vice presidential candidates Muhaymin Iskandar and Dr. Mohammad Mahfud, respectively.
The defendant in the case is the General Election Commission, which officially announced Prabowo's victory on March 20.
Mr. Prabowo has voluntarily participated as a “party” in the ongoing trial and has provided a legal team to the court.
The ruling came after weeks of court hearings and witness interviews during which the plaintiffs failed to convincingly prove their allegations of voter fraud and demonstrated serious legal violations in Gibran's candidacy. could not.
Prabowo secured a landslide victory with 58% of the vote, and a verdict from the Constitutional Court is widely expected to confirm his victory.
