Voters headed to the polls long before the Pennsylvania primary, with presidential candidates from both major parties already decided.
CARLISLE, Pa. — Voters headed to the polls Tuesday for the Pennsylvania primary.
But the big race remains less competitive as both major parties' presidential candidates have already been decided.
As President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump prepare for a rematch in November, recent polls show interest in the upcoming election is at its lowest level in nearly 20 years.
“We came here because it's part of our duty as American citizens, but we're not happy with our choices,” said Linda Sempke, a Newberry Township voter. said.
“I'm very concerned about all the dissent and what's going to happen to us,” said Marilyn Tenenoff, another Newberry Township voter.
A rematch between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump could also affect turnout in the primary election. Sarah Niebler, a political science professor at Dickinson College, said primary turnout in Pennsylvania dropped to about 18% during the last presidential election, when it was not competitive.
“We know that people go to vote based on what's on the top of their ballot,” said Sarah Niebler, an associate professor of political science, “and so the fact that presidential primaries decide both parties… That's not much of an incentive.” I hope everyone comes out today. ”
Although the presidential primary has been decided, voters say they are focused on making their voices heard in key local elections.
“There [are] Other important races in Pennsylvania, including Scott Perry and the Democratic primary [for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District]” Tenenov said. “I had to choose between several guys who could potentially run against him and who had a better chance against him.”
Other voters are focused on a variety of important issues, including abortion, the economy and immigration.
Rachel Pistol, a junior at Dickinson College, said, “I really looked at how the candidates were addressing abortion rights and gun safety in particular. Pennsylvania is a purple state, so these are important issues. It's a very important thing to focus on.”
