Then, in an unexpected moment, everything came crashing down.
Tyrese Maxey, who held a six-point lead, was the biggest star in the Sixers' upset at The Garden on Wednesday.
A 4-point play was followed by a 3-pointer near half court, and the game was tied at 97-97, sending it into overtime.
His outrageous behavior left New York's famous celebrity die-hard Knicks fans completely outraged by what happened before their eyes.
Comedian Tracy Morgan flashed her right middle finger at Maxey. Meanwhile, Hollywood actor Ben Stiller was standing next to Morgan, and a photo of the moment showed the actor staring at Maxie with an angry grin on his face.
“I never understood what 'furious' meant until I saw Ben Stiller's face here. Steaming lol, buddy,” one fan wrote to X.
Comedian and TV host Jon Stewart poked fun at himself when his bemused reaction to Maxey's show became a meme.
“With all due respect to Maxie…but damn…I'm clearly too old for this kind of thing,” Stewart wrote on X's post, accompanied by an image. It showed Stewart standing in his courtside seat as Maxey ran past him toward the 76ers. Bench after hitting the equalizer.
Maxey led the 76ers to a 112-106 overtime victory over the Knicks, but they still trailed 3-2 in the series.
The former Kentucky star finished the tournament with 46 points, five rebounds and nine assists.
“All I could think about there was find a way to survive,” Maxey said of the elimination contest.
The first round of the Knicks vs. Sixers playoff series will return to Philadelphia for Game 6 on Friday at 11am (AEST).
