The California State University Board of Regents hosted a public forum on April 23 to allow students, staff, faculty, and the community to comment on their expectations for the next California State University Bakersfield president.
The presidential search process consists of two committees: the Presidential Search Committee and the Advisory Committee.
The Presidential Search Committee is comprised of several CSU Board members, including CSU President Mildred Garcia; The Advisory Board is comprised of representatives from students, alumni, faculty, staff, and campus advisory board members. Both committees will work together to find the next CSUB president. A complete list of committee members can be found here.
The committee will spend the next several months reviewing and interviewing candidates, and the next CSUB president will be announced at the September board meeting.
“It is critical that Cal State Bakersfield hear from the community what they want in its next leader,” Garcia said.
During the public forum, members of the CSUB community shared what they are looking for in the next president, including areas such as the university's background, involvement, and goals. Community members shared that they want a president who prioritizes inclusivity and supports all students to feel like they belong at her CSUB.
“As of yesterday, I had a student in my office who said he wanted to transfer from this university because he felt like he didn't belong on this campus,” said Tamar Anthony, co-president of CSUB's Black Faculty Association. Ta.
Others commented that they felt CSUB was not inclusive enough and wanted a president who would promote inclusivity and diversity on campus, not only among students but also among staff and faculty. Speakers called for a president who supports Black students on campus and prioritizes their success.
Speakers also said they want a president who is involved on campus, approachable and makes students feel a sense of belonging. They are looking for people who want to work with members of the local community, including local First Nations and indigenous tribes.
The plenary speakers hope that the next CSUB president will be willing to follow through on his promises and be committed to being a part of the community.
“I believe in my students…and even more so in my colleagues. They are the best, we are the best, and we deserve the best. While you're looking, We wish CSUB the best in its next president,” said Natasha Harris, director of special programs and student retention initiatives.
