Sherry McInnis, a Newport staff member in the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Undersea Warfare (USW) Combat Systems Division, was named the 2024 Technology Services Industry Leader in the Providence Business News weekly, based in Rhode Island. Winner of the Business Woman Award. island. This annual award recognizes industry leaders who have been in their profession for 20 years or more.
McInnis, a Portsmouth, R.I., resident, serves the Newport Division in three roles: USW Trainer Customer Advocate, Mission Capability Manager, and Combat Systems Trainer Technical Project Manager. She began her 40-year career at Division Newport while in high school where she worked as a secretary. She attended college while working full time and then earned an advanced degree as her career progressed.
As a customer advocate for USW trainers, she successfully builds working relationships with senior Navy training commanders, interagency training project managers, and systems engineers. Mr. McInnis is considered one of the civilian leaders in training systems and technology for training task groups and mission groups throughout the Navy.
As the Newport Division's mission capability manager responsible for warfighter performance and training, McInnis will provide a mechanism for Newport Division alignment across all aspects of mission capability, both internally and externally, and provide a mechanism for evolving new Facilitates solutions that support mission area needs. She holds training and evaluation co-chair responsibilities for the USW Fleet Collaborative Team Executive Working Group.
In his third position, McInnis is a technical project manager for combat systems trainers within the Newport Division's USW Combat Systems Division. For more than 20 years, she has worked with the Naval Surface Warfare Center's Carderock Division, industry partners, and academia to develop and sustain submarine trainer products.
“These efforts advance the Navy's goals and the strategic goals of Naval Sea Systems Command by applying engineering and procurement best practices to the trainer school production site,” the award states. Mr. McInnis will be honored at a Providence Business News ceremony on May 23 in Providence, Rhode Island.
NUWC Newport is the nation's oldest military center, dating back to 1869 as a naval torpedo station established on Goat Island in Newport Harbor. His NUWC Newport, commanded by Colonel Chad Hennings, maintains major detachments in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Andros Island. In addition to islands in the Bahamas, testing facilities are located in Seneca Lake and Fishers Island, New York, Leesburg, Florida, and Dodge Pond, Connecticut.
