The Monterey City Council will decide whether to approve four over-the-counter retail marijuana licenses. The City of Monterey initially received 13 of these applications during the public application period, which ran from December 15, 2023 to January 29, 2024. City leaders narrowed the field down to his eight candidates after a detailed evaluation and vetting process of applications. The city has now reduced the number of candidates to four after interviewing the previous eight. A selection committee consisting of Mayor Tyler Williamson and Vice Mayor Kim Barber selected the four finalists and their applications. The Monterey City Council will consider approving the commission's selection on Tuesday, May 21st, as well as holding a drawing to determine which zones are selected. These zones are located in popular downtown areas such as Lighthouse Avenue, Cannery Row, Downtown (Old Monterey), and North Fremont Street. “Our goal has always been to take a methodical approach to implementing the city's cannabis roadmap and make sound decisions along the way,” City Manager Hans Usler said. Usler also said he believes the City Council will approve responsible cannabis retailers that engage in cannabis-related businesses. The community will fit well into the business district and generate revenue to support city services.
