Gilmore's Amy Weibrecht won the 800 and 1,600 meters and ran the first-place 4×400 on Day 2 of the Division II Perry District May 18. The Lancers won the team title with 120 points. (Barry Booher – News Herald)
As I entered the stadium on opening day at Division II Perry District, someone from the Gilmore delegation was playing Rihanna's “Work” over a wireless speaker.
Lancers is putting all its efforts into business during this time.
The work day isn't complete until they leave the district, hardware in hand, on their way south.
On the second day, May 18, Amy Weibrecht took the lead and the job was completed.
Gilmore had four wins on the second day, including double the distance from Weibrecht in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter dashes, and cruised past Beechwood in the closing stages for the women's team crown, 120-104. did.
“I’m really excited,” Weibrecht said. “Everything fell into place today and it was really exciting. I think all season long we've just been patiently waiting for the postseason. And I think it really showed today. It's very exciting and we hope to continue this in the regional as well. I will take advantage of it.”

The Lancers' 4×4 title may have been the biggest statement of intent during that process.
The quartet of Grace Kotler, Weibrecht, Leelyn Jackson and Abby Detzel competed with a time of 4 minutes, 1.07 seconds. Between that and his 2024 News-Herald coverage area regular-season best of 3:59.83 at Woodridge Wrap-Up, Gilmore is on track for next weekend's D-II Austintown Fitch Regional. I'm here.
“I think this year's 4×4 is one of the most exciting races I can participate in,” Weybrecht said. “I think going into regionals gives us a lot of confidence. And hopefully we can get it down there and get it even lower for states.
“(The sub-4 at Woodridge) was really big. I don't think we expected it either. To be honest, we all said, 'We're just going to get through this 4×4.' It felt like Like I wasn't expecting anything big. Suddenly it happened. And the confidence we gained from that and the excitement we had for 4×4 was really, really great. ”
Weibrecht's individual double, with her usual accuracy, served its purpose as a baseline en route to Fitch, but there was no need to drop the proverbial hammer. She ran an early 2:15.80 in the open 8 and a 5:00.90 in the mile, but she never received a remote challenge.
“I just wanted to run smoothly,” Weibrecht said. “I like to get out a little bit because I don't want to risk tripping in the crowd or anything like that. But once I get there, I save it all for later in the season, so I don't know what to do. Don't do anything weird, just keep running.”
The Lancers' 4×2 also stood out, recording a time of 1:42.51.
Before rushing back west for prom, Dakota Houston had a great day for runner-up Beachwood, taking first place in the morning start long jump and then competing with fellow coverage area stalwarts in the appointment viewing finals. He won easily in a sprint sweep against Maliyah Moore (Gilmore) and showed a dynamic performance. Winning 4×1 anchor.
The Bison senior made a 17-foot, 10-inch jump on his first attempt and did one more preliminary jump before calling it a day.
“Usually the first jump is the best jump, and that was today,” Houston said. “But with everyone's seeding, and I also have him running three events, we said, 'Let's jump a good time, like in the low 17s, and get through the rest.' I was like, 'That's what I did. I jumped 17-10, this is a PR.
“I think[my jumps tend to get better faster]because I warmed up properly. It's nice and loose. And I had a blast this year too. Last year I kept stuttering in front of the board and sadly I wasn't able to achieve that, but this year I learned that if I take time to take a deep breath and be happy, I can accomplish a lot.”
Her 4×1 anchor shined in the last 50 reel against Gilmore, strong in the out-of-drive phase and effective all the way to the line, albeit short, as Beechwood clocked a 49.34.
“We and Gilmore have always been good rivals,” Houston said. “I love them. They and Hawken, they're our rivals, but we're all good friends. We all talk. We all hang out. It's really good at the end of the day. The thing is, they changed the lineup, and we were trying to keep the same lineup.
“I have a best friend, Kylie (Walters), who was a sophomore, freshman and senior, and I've been the anchor since then. So our energy has always been on point.”
On the boys side, Perry placed second on the team for Glenville with an 85, while Brayden Richards won a double in the hurdles on the second day.
Speaking of his generational skill set, Richards' 14.61 in the 110 hurdles beat his younger brother Javin's meet standard, but he was clearly better than that. Even more impressive may have been his accomplishment in the 300 hurdles. He had strong, confident control over the 100 hurdles and into the 150 hurdles with a score of 38.15.
“After qualifying, I had a really smooth race in qualifying, nothing out of the ordinary,” Richards said. “But I felt really smooth in qualifying. I went into the final, switched blocks, took fewer steps. I felt OK. Nothing too crazy. I didn't feel very good. But it still hit 38.1. So I think we'll be back next week and probably in the mid-37s.”
Richards' event planning was a mystery, even to Richards himself, coming into the district. He initially competed in his favorite events: pole vault, hurdles, 200 meters, and long jump. The latter two were hurt on the first day, during which he went 15-6 and won his fourth district pole vault title, leaving Richards with a spot in the 4×1. The quartet was a pleasant surprise, finishing second with a score of 42.95.
“The day before, for some reason, we were planning on doing 4×4 (as the fourth event),” Richards said. “And our 4×1 ran very stable (preliminary) times even without me. So we decided not to do the 4×4 in qualifying so we could have a choice on Saturday. We came to the conclusion that we were going to do 4×1, do well in school, and go to regionals, and I'm glad we made that choice.”

Lake Catholic's Claire Duricki doubled her time in the hurdles, scoring 15.78 points in the 1st and 45.92 points in the 3rd. The latter fended off a late comeback from West Giauga's Kara Daystar, who won her third career district championship in this tournament.

Jack Kittle of Chagrin Falls won the Open 4 with a guts of 49.01, which required a hard homestretch due to the wind picking up. The senior then did a commendable job anchoring the four-wheel-drive to bring the Tigers to a district berth.
