Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani will face six challengers in the June 29 African presidential election, according to the final list presented by the Constitutional Council on Monday.
Ghazouani, 67, is expected to win a second term as head of state of the country of 4.5 million people, located in a strategic location between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
The council did not recognize the candidacy of former President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is in prison for embezzlement, something he has always denied.
Aziz was allowed to leave prison last week to submit his candidacy to the Constitutional Council, but was denied because he had an insufficient number of sponsors, according to sources close to the Constitutional Council.
Among the likely candidates for June's vote are Islamist opposition leader Hamadi Ould Sid el-Mokhtar and human rights activist Bilam Ould Sid el-Mokhtar, who came second after Ghazani in the 2019 vote. Includes Dar Urd Abeid.
