Megami was recently seen on our screens. rupaul's drag race In season 16, she stood out not only for her amazing lip-syncing Lalaparza in the penultimate episode, but also as the series' first major cosplay queen. While much attention has been focused on her performance in the former, it's the latter that particularly stood out to the gamer and geek community.
Of course, Megami isn't the only drag artist on the show with looks inspired by gaming and nerd references — there have been other standouts like Jaremi Carey (formerly known as Phi Phi O'Hara) and the UK's Astina Mandela, who we've previously spoken about for her Mileena look — but Megami is arguably the first artist competing to fully embrace her cosplay and nerd roots and proudly show them off through her various looks.
We had a chance to chat with Megami to find out more about her looks, inspiration, and love for gaming.
Robin: Hello, Megami, thank you for joining us! You just finished season 16 of RuPaul's Drag Race, and what is one standout moment that sums up your entire experience on the show? Then what will it be?
Megami: Of course it's Lalaparza! My sweet Judy Miss Love Dion may have won the award, but I feel like I won the episode. This is a nice summary of my life in general.
What made you audition for the show? Was it your first time auditioning?
So I auditioned five times for that show. I just wanted to share my geek hobby and love of cosplay with the world, and I thought Drag Race would give me a platform to do that.
You are well known as a cosplay gamer girl, but it was truly iconic how many cosplay inspired looks you were able to provide despite copyright restrictions. Did you initially set a mission to ensure that most of your looks were inspired by gaming or geeky stuff?
So cosplay and geeky looks are my drugs. I can't help but be inspired by my favorite characters and stories. So when I was designing and sewing my own looks and creating mood boards of what I wanted to look like, I unintentionally gravitated towards a bit of a fashion geek. Plus, cosplay allowed me to learn how to sew and craft items and accessories, so I couldn't help it.
Here are some of the most iconic looks from the show… Your promotional look was inspired by Rogue from X-Men. Please tell us more about that look. Is Rogue your favorite character?
Well, our promotional theme was focused on 'green', but as I was putting together mood boards and different concepts and silhouettes to think about what I wanted my look to convey about me, I realized that I wanted to 'super green'. I settled on “Hero”.And of course, be massive x men A fan of some X tattoos, Rogue fits exactly that brief. She is a strong and adaptable character in her iconic green and yellow suit, which is perfect!
Episode 3 saw a look inspired by Hades' Nyx. Are you looking forward to it? hades 2 Will it be coming later this year?
Oh, I'm counting down the days until I get it hades 2! The first one was such a revelation. This really was his 2020 lockdown game like me. Not only was the gameplay great, but so was the story, character development, and art style. 10/10! Zagreus and Thanatos 4 Eva! I'm so excited to see the next chapter!
With the epic lip sync Lala Parza, we want you to fall out– Inspired look, what do you think of the new one fall out TV program?
Well, maybe that's a good problem to have since I'm blessed to be booked, but I just haven't had the time to sit down and watch the new releases. fall out Showing it. I guess it's kind of an occupational hazard from working long hours. But I've heard it's great so it's literally number one on my list of things to watch on my breaks!
Finally, in the finale, diablo 4 Eleganza, tell us a bit more about that look. diablo 4was a bit of a divisive game due to its online nature and non-linear storyline.
A few years ago, I cosplayed as Lilith. Because she quickly became an iconic character with an iconic silhouette. For her finale, she wanted to connect all the parts of her personal brand and put her Lilith at the center of her mood board. She's a little blasphemous, half demonic, half awesome, and a little cosplay-infused…very me!
As for the game, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed the content. The world was gorgeous and fun to explore, and the story was there when I wanted to come back. I know there's a bit of controversy over the lack of post-game content, but I enjoyed the story and the game itself all the way through. There are too many games in the backlog that it's no exaggeration to complain. Diablo 500 hours of additional content will not be provided.
Since you haven't appeared on TV, you should also add your press looks where you admit to cosplaying more than others. Please tell me more about Morrigan Aensland. darkstalker look.
For press week, I wanted to give the girls something gag-y with my look. I've always had a deep love for female characters who are sexy and unafraid to be scary at the same time. “Powerful Women in Geekdom” is what got me into drag in the first place, so I wanted to pay homage to my roots and one of my favorite girlfriends.
This season of Drag Race was packed with gamers! It's so great to see a drag artist embrace his inner geek. Did you all have a chance to play together? Besides you, who is the biggest gamer among the cast?
yes! I'm so happy that all my sisters are gamers! Dawn is a huge Animal Crossing fan, Amanda is a Sims addict, Shunami is a Pokemon fanatic like me, and Morphine and Miya are obsessed with Fortnite. So this time's cast is full of gamers! We haven't had a chance to play together yet, but we've always talked about how we'd like to get everyone online so that eventually we can all sit down and play.
