Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump secured the nomination and continue to face opposition from within their own party even after their rivals dropped out. While Biden faces protest votes over his handling of the Israel-Hamas war, Trump still has thousands voting for his long-losing rival Nikki Haley.
Eight presidential nomination contests will remain after Tuesday. Democrats will participate in Idaho, the District of Columbia, Guam and the Virgin Islands, and both parties will participate in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota.
Voters in Kentucky, Oregon, Georgia and Idaho will also hold state primaries on Tuesday to choose candidates for the House of Representatives and other races. And in California's Central Valley, voters will choose a Republican to replace former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Republicans Vince Fung and Mike Boudreau faced off in a special runoff election to end McCarthy's term and are scheduled to run again in November for the next full two-year term.
In Georgia, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the prosecution of Trump in the 2020 election interference case, is running against challenger Christian Wise Smith in the Democratic primary. Mr. Smith is a lawyer and author who ran against Mr. Willis four years ago.
The judge in this case is also up for re-election. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee is running against attorney and radio host Robert Pattillo in a bipartisan race. McAfee is a former prosecutor who was appointed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in 2022.
Oregon's 5th Congressional District is home to one of the nation's leading Democratic primaries, with progressive candidate Jamie McLeod-Skinner, who ousted the moderate Democratic incumbent two years ago, and some Democratic Party officials as co-conspirators. That's what pits state Rep. Janelle Bynum, who believes this is the case. A more likely candidate. The winner will face first-term Republican Rep. Lori Chavez Delemer in the general election, a race both parties are focusing on.
In the Portland-based 3rd Congressional District, Democrats will select a candidate to replace retiring Rep. Earl Blumenauer in a safe Democratic seat. Candidates also include Sushila Jayapal, sister of progressive U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal. Sushila Jayapal will face two other well-funded Democratic challengers, state Rep. Maxine Dexter and Gresham City Councilman Eddie Morales.
