Gabbard is a veteran, long-time Hawaii state legislator and was a presidential candidate in 2020 but left the Democratic Party.
LIVERMORE, Calif. — Tulsi Gabbard, a Hawaiian veteran and congresswoman who ran for president in 2020, is scheduled to speak at the Bankhead Theater on June 18 at an event hosted by the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
Gabbard grew up in Hawaii and was elected to the Hawaii State Legislature at age 21. During her time in Congress, she enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard and served with multiple deployments in Iraq and Kuwait. She is currently a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, commanding the 440th Civil Affairs Battalion.

She served on the Honolulu City Council from 2011 to 2012 and represented Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District, an area surrounding Honolulu, from 2012 to 2021, becoming the first Samoan-American woman to serve in Congress. She served as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2013 to 2016. In 2020, she ran for president as the Democratic candidate. Since then, she has reregistered as an independent, spoken at CPAC, commented on Fox News, and been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate for Donald Trump in 2024.
Since her campaign, she has created a nonprofit called We Must Protect to help Maui recover from the devastating wildfires in 2023. She recently published a book called “For Love of Country: Leave the Democratic Party Behind.”
