JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is still remaining tight-lipped about what or who is at the center of their investigation following a Wednesday, May 22, raid in Jackson.
Downtown Cigar Company is just one of a few locations where federal agents have been spotted conducting searches and seizing items. The business is owned by Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens.
Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes (Ward 3) has been outspoken about issues in the city, including concerns about wasted funds.
“Everybody is accountable. There are checks and balances,” Stokes said.
The city councillor said allegations of corruption must be addressed at all levels.
“I'll never forget someone said to me at a city council meeting, 'Mr. Stokes, the mayor says if you take a drug test, I'll take one too,' and I said, 'Let's go. The evidence will be on Channel 12 today.' I took a drug test right then and there and I passed. And if you want me to take a test right now, I'll take one,” Stokes said.
Federal agents were seen at several locations across the nation's capital on Wednesday, including Owens' office.
“We support our district attorney, we feel he's doing a good job and we're confident he's prepared to represent himself and the county no matter what charges are brought,” First District Supervisor Robert Graham said.
There have been reports that federal agents have visited Jackson City Hall. WJTV 12 News reached out to the City of Jackson and were told there has been no raid and they are not aware of the FBI ever visiting City Hall.
“I don't know where the FBI is looking, but they're doing their job. We all have a job to do and let's make sure we all do our jobs,” Stokes said.
The FBI said there was no threat to public safety during the raid.
