The baby monkey will be born in April, and staff plan to examine it this summer to determine its gender.
BOISE, Idaho — Zoo Boise has welcomed a new addition to their family: a baby cottontop tamarin born in April, the fourth born to parents named Eddie and Mimi.
“The new baby is thriving and joining our growing tamarin family. Brother Rockford was born in 2022, and twins Momo and Suki were born last year in 2023. Zoo staff will learn the gender of the newborn at their first veterinary checkup this summer,” the news release stated.
The babies will cling to their mother's back during this stage of their infancy, which you can see by visiting the zoo to see the family in action. The zoo asks people to remain quiet when visiting to minimize stress for the newcomers.
“This is a fantastic addition to Zoo Boise,” said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway. “This new baby cottontop tamarin contributes to the advancement of conservation efforts at Zoo Boise and plays a vital role in helping to protect this critically endangered species in South America.”
This birth is very exciting and significant for Zoo Boise. Parents Eddie and Mimi were matched as part of the Cotton-Top Tamarin Species Survival Program (SSP). The SSP is one of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) key conservation programs. Its primary role is to serve as a breeding program for select endangered or threatened species; a dating service for special animals, if you will. The goal is to maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations of these animals to increase their numbers and to allow certain zoo-bred animals to be reintroduced into their natural habitats, if necessary.
