Alistair Grant, the outgoing chairman of Scotland's largest construction industry body SELECT, has issued a stern warning about the rise in unscrupulous contractors posing as qualified electricians.
Mr Grant, whose two-year term ends next week, has highlighted growing industry concerns about technology such as electric vehicle (EV) charging points and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels being improperly installed.
Alistair Grant highlighted the dangers of inexperienced people tackling complex electrical installations and emphasised the need for specialist electricians trained in electrical best practice and safety measures.
Alistair Grant said: “One solar installation I was recently called to had a DC cable running from the roof, through a pile of children's toys in the attic and into a cupboard inside the house. It was clear that there was the potential for a disastrous fire to break out.”
“This is a classic example of what we are seeing and highlights why consumers should always hire fully trained and qualified electricians from SELECT member companies for any electrical work.
“Unfortunately, in the current cost of living crisis, consumers are often making decisions based on cost alone, not realising they could be faced with a much higher bill later on to get the work done correctly and safely.”
