BETHLEHEM (CBS) — Philadelphia suburbs are expected to play a key role in the upcoming general election, and one of those areas is the Lehigh Valley.
The city of Bethlehem is located in both Lehigh County and Northampton County. In the past two presidential elections, Northampton voted Republican in 2016 but flipped to the Democratic Party in 2020.
“Obviously, it's purple so there are some very strong opinions, but it's all mixed together,” said Lynn Brolly of Bethlehem.
Voters along Main Street shared their views.
“I hesitate to say it, but it's Trump,” said Scott Steinluck, who was visiting the city.
CBS News Philadelphia asked Brolly if he had already decided how he was going to vote.
“Oh, of course, that's right. That's Biden,” Broly said.
“If it were up to me, I wouldn't vote for either, but if it came down to choosing one or the other, I think I've made up my mind,” Jack Arnold said.
“I'm not a Biden fan and I'm not a Trump fan,” Julie Weaver said. “I really don't know what to do with this election.”
“I don't know how many people are really undecided about whether they're going to go to the polls or not,” said Lauren Cristella, who works for the Committee of Seventy, a nonprofit that advocates for better elections.
She described the moment: Trump found guilty in 'hush money trial'” may be the “first opportunity” for voters to start paying attention to the election campaign.
“Voters across the county and state who will decide this are in just a handful of locations, and we're talking about maybe 40,000 votes, a number that could fill one of our larger stadiums,” Cristella said.
Voting that could play a big role in the biggest race of the year.
