An oil tycoon is testing the luxury housing market in downtown San Antonio.
Rod Lewis, the billionaire founder and CEO of oil and gas company Lewis Energy, is selling his 3,850-square-foot penthouse at the Arts Residences at the Thompson Hotel for $3.3 million, which works out to about $857 per square foot, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
The selling agent is Haley Rodriguez of Cooper Sotheby's International Realty.
Lewis' two-story unit has two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a private three-car garage and balconies on both levels with views of Camp Bliss and Government Canyon. There are two bedrooms on the first floor and a “spacious main retreat,” lounge and glass-enclosed study on the second floor.
The building, located at 123 Lexington Ave., features a pool, spa, fitness center, 24-hour concierge and access to the River Walk.
Mr. Lewis purchased the pre-construction apartment for an undisclosed amount and heavily customized the layout; there is only one other two-story unit in the building, Mr. Rodriguez said.
In San Antonio, sales of luxury homes priced above $1 million fell 8.3% last quarter from a year ago, even as new luxury home listings increased 35% year over year, according to Redfin.
Rodriguez said putting more luxury homes up for sale publicly, rather than in off-market transactions, could help revitalize San Antonio's luxury housing market.
“Austin has really focused on real estate marketing and has done a great job of using the media to raise awareness of the city, and I think we should do a little more of that here,” she told the outlet. “Let those people who are lying in bed at night scrolling through Zillow know that there are some special properties out there in San Antonio.”
