Jennifer Lopez has been a big celebrity for years. She's had a successful career as an actress and singer, and even starred in a reality TV show. But while she's one of the biggest stars of the 21st century, Lopez says she's always felt like an outsider among her peers. Here's why she feels that way:
Jennifer Lopez has said she feels like she doesn't fit in with other celebrities.
Despite her years of fame and success, Lopez says she has struggled for acceptance. Hustler While the film garnered Oscar buzz, many critics have called her an underrated actor who deserves more recognition, and she often feels like she isn't taken as seriously as her contemporaries, which may contribute to her feeling like an outsider.
“I've always felt like an outsider in the fashion world, in the music world, in the film world,” she told Vogue in 2022. “Everybody knows each other, and all the artists talk to each other, and I go to the Met Ball and all the girls are hanging out together, and I'm not in that group. Maybe it's just insecurity.”
She said this was tough for her because she wanted to fit in with the other stars, and although she tried to do so, she struggled to find her place.
“It's not because I'm not sociable or I don't want to make friends,” she said. “I've always been a loner, doing things at my own pace. Just focusing on myself. I've always felt that way. I still do, but I'm trying! Before, the idea of validation in other people's eyes was important to me. I really did. Because I wanted to be part of a club.”
But lately she's been less interested in fitting in.
“But I don't feel that way anymore. I'm after something much bigger,” she says. “To touch people's lives and have them be moved.”
Is Jennifer Lopez friends with other celebrities?
While Lopez has struggled with being accepted by her Hollywood peers, one of her closest friends is another celebrity: Leah Remini, whom she met in 2004.
“I was friends with Marc Anthony, and then he started dating Jennifer and was in the movie,” Remini told Entertainment Tonight. “I went to the premiere and he said, 'You have to meet Jennifer,' and he said to Jennifer, 'You have to meet Leah and Angelo.' [Pagan]'” my husband said. So we went to the premiere expecting that she would be ugly in real life.”
When the two met, Remini told Lopez to her face that she wished she wasn't as beautiful as she looked on screen.
“I said that too! I was like, 'Damn, why are you so cute?' and she laughed,” Remini says.[Then] I thought, “Oh, I hope she's an idiot. You know what? I thought, 'Maybe she's an idiot!' I hoped to find something, but I couldn't.”
Lopez said this was the moment the two “fell in love.”
“It was just like an instant hit. I was like, 'I love this person. I have fun with this person. This person makes me laugh,'” Lopez said. “She's cool and we come from very similar backgrounds, so we work well together.”
However, in recent years, Lopez and Remini have reportedly had a falling out over Lopez's rekindled relationship with Ben Affleck.
She once isolated herself in a brutally honest interview
In 1998, Lopez rarely gave interviews that other stars would find palatable. She was a rising star, and she answered questions about her fellow actors. She had startlingly low opinions of many of her contemporaries, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Claire Danes and Cameron Diaz.
“I was never a huge fan of hers,” she said of Winona Ryder in an interview with Moviefone. “She's well respected in Hollywood, she's been nominated for an Oscar, but I've never heard the general public or my friends say, 'Oh, I like her.' But she's pretty and talented, and I like her just because she looks like my sister, Leslie.”
She also laughed at the idea that Salma Hayek competed with her for the leading role. Serena.
“We're in two different realms,” she said. “She's the sexy bombshell and she does that kind of stuff. I do a lot of stuff. I laugh when she says she got offers.” Serenawhich was a complete lie. If that's what she's doing for publicity, then that's what she's doing.”
Lopez claims Moviefone took her comments out of context.
