“For me, gender is not fixed, and I don't know if it ever will be. For me, gender may always be fluid,” Korine said in a 2022 interview with Vogue.
The 28-year-old has spoken out many times about the string of unexpected homophobia and transphobia they have faced since coming out.
“The vicious criticism is worse than we expected. We'd like to think we live in a progressive society, but so much of what we see is becoming more and more regressive,” they told Harper's Bazaar.
Pronouns are an essential part of affirming an individual's gender identity, and more and more celebrities have recently been speaking openly about their pronouns and gender fluidity, despite fears of public backlash.
Here are seven more celebs who use the gender-neutral pronouns “they/them.” There are others out there from time to time.
1. Bella Ramsey (they/them)
of The Last of Us Star Ramsay came out as non-binary and genderfluid in an interview with The New York Times in January of last year. Ramsay told the publication that she wasn't too picky about pronouns, but that she prefers pronouns that are generally perceived as gender-neutral.
“Being called 'them' is the truest thing to me because it's who I am,” Ramsay told British Vogue last June.
2. Sam Smith (they/them)
Later, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Smith announced that he would officially change his pronouns to “they/them.”
3. Elliot Page (Male/Female)
The Umbrella Academy Star Elliot Page came out as transgender in 2020 through a post on X.
“I want to let everyone know that I am transgender and my pronouns are he/they,” Page said in a statement. “I love that I am transgender. And I love that I am queer,” they continued.
4. Halsey (She/They)
In 2021, the “Bad at Love” singer quietly changed her pronouns to “she/they” on both Instagram and X.
In an Instagram Story, the singer thanked fans for their support and clarified her preferred pronouns: “Including 'they' in addition to 'she' feels the most authentic to me,” a fan wrote.
5. Demi Lovato (She/They)
Lovato came out as non-binary in the podcast pilot. 4D In 2021, the “Cool for the Summer” singer also announced that he would officially change his pronouns to “they/them.”
In 2023, the singer told GQ Spain that she had started re-embracing the typically feminine pronouns “she/her” because educating and explaining the pronouns “they/them” to people was “exhausting.”
Currently, Lovato's Instagram profile states that her pronouns are “they/ them/she/her.”
6. Kehlani (She/They)
Singer-songwriter Kehlani came out as a lesbian via a since-deleted Tik Tok video in 2021. That same year, the “Can I” singer admitted that she prefers “she/they” pronouns.
“I don't mind being called 'she,' but when they say 'they,' I feel really validated. Like… they really see me,” the artist said in a 2021 interview with Birdie Magazine.
7. Janelle Monae (She/They)
Actress, author, and singer Janelle Monáe came out as non-binary in 2022 during an episode of Jada Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talk.
“I don't see myself as just a woman. I feel like I have all of my energy…I feel like God is so much bigger than 'he' or 'she.' If I am God, then I am everything,” Monáe said.
That same year, Monáe told the Los Angeles Times that her pronouns were “free-a** motherf***** – and they/them, her/she.”
