This week, the Republican Party's Latino outreach group Latinos for Trump officially changed its name to Latinos for Trump, a subtle change that solidifies the GOP's commitment to elevating and embracing “good” Latinos, said Julio Ricardo Barrera, MSNBC columnist and founder of the Latino Newsletter. Callie Crossley's Under the Radar.
“My conclusion is that it was a really smart move by the Trump campaign,” Barrera said. “No matter what you say about Democrats or Republicans, both parties know they have to bring Hispanic voters into their ranks.”
With Latino voters a big factor in this year's presidential election and immigration and the border at the forefront of voter attention, Marcela Garcia, a columnist and editor at The Boston Globe, said Democrats should be proactive on immigration rather than reactive.
“The Democratic Party, and [President Joe] “Biden, in particular, would be well served to focus on immigration and tout the accomplishments he's made, which, by the way, are no small accomplishments,” Garcia said.
In international news, Mexico's new president, Claudia Scheinbaum, broke the glass ceiling to become the first woman to lead the country. She won 60% of the vote, but Garcia says her election has drawn mixed reactions.
“Certainly, this is a victory worth celebrating, but at the same time, we have to question Mr. Scheinbaum's qualifications,” Garcia said.
In arts and culture news, superstar Jennifer Lopez has recently seen a surge in hate. What's going on? Garcia and Varela cite an article by Globe columnist Renée Graham that examined this barrage of hate and debate whether the hate is justified.
Finally, we salute Mexican icon Francesca Viveros, better known by her stage name Paquita la del Barrio, who is the subject of a new telenovela available on Netflix.
This week's Latino News Roundtable will analyze these stories.
