Joe Alwyn has spoken publicly for the first time about his split from Taylor Swift, urging fans to show empathy.
Alwyn, 33, and Swift, 34, dated for six years before splitting in April 2023. The breakup sparked discussion on social media, with Swift fans sharing fan theories and analyzing Swift's lyrics for subtle references to Alwyn.
The release of Swift's latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” has sparked new speculation among fans, with some thinking the song “So Long, London” is about Alwyn.
The actor shared his thoughts on the matter for the first time in an interview with The Sunday Times on Saturday. When asked if he'd listened to the album, Alwyn acknowledged the difficulty of ending a long-term relationship in public.
“I hope everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving and committed relationship of over six and a half years,” he said.
He said the end of their relationship was a “hard thing to get over.”
“What's unusual and extraordinary about this situation is that after a week it suddenly became public and the outside world was able to intervene,” he added.
Alwyn told The Times that they had “made peace” with the misunderstandings surrounding their breakup, especially after the couple had gone to great lengths to keep their relationship private.
“As you all know, we've mutually decided to keep the more intimate details of our relationship private. It's never been something to be commercialized and I don't see any reason to change that now,” he said. “And this is a little over a year ago now, but I'm blessed to be in a really great place in my life, both professionally and personally, and I feel really good.”
A representative for Swift did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
Following her split with Alwyn, Swift briefly dated 1975 frontman Matty Healy and then began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
The announcement of her split from Alwyn in 2023 came shortly after the start of her famous “Eras Tour,” which led to increased speculation and scrutiny of her performances among fans.
The tour cemented her dominance over the music industry, propelling herself, and nearly everything she touches, to a new level of economic power.
She pumped billions of dollars into the U.S. economy last year through her tours and movies, and NFL ratings soared after his highly publicized relationship with Kelsey.
