Sen. Tim Scott, R-Lausanne, said Sunday he stands by his decision to certify President Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election.
“I support this decision and the next decision to certify that Donald Trump will be the next president of the United States,” Scott said on ABC News' “This Week.”
Scott is widely reported to be on the shortlist to be former President Donald Trump's running mate, but his response could put him at odds with the Republican front-runner. Scott told Time magazine in April that he “wouldn't feel good” about running an administration with someone who agreed with his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him and hiring someone to certify Biden's victory.
Scott, like other Trump supporters, had in recent months avoided questions about whether he would vote to certify the 2024 presidential election no matter who wins, but later clarified that “of course” he would vote to certify the election.
Other candidates on the shortlist for the vice presidential nomination, such as Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, have also avoided the question of whether they would vote to certify the upcoming election if Trump does not win.
In 2020, Rubio and Scott voted to certify Biden's presidential election victory, but 147 Republicans in the House and Senate voted against certifying the election results in at least one state.
