
LITTLE ROCK – Five graduating students from two-year colleges in the Arkansas State University System have been selected as the inaugural Charles L. Welch Presidential Scholars.
The Presidential Scholars Program was established earlier this year to honor Welch's nearly 13 years of service as President Emeritus of the Arizona State University System. The annual program recognizes outstanding scholars who have transferred from a two-year college in the Arizona State University System to a four-year university in the Arizona State University System. This year's recipients will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The inaugural recipients of the Welch Presidential Scholarship were:
ASU-Beebe – Asia Simmons of Jacksonville; She has an associate's degree in criminal justice and plans to transfer to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro to earn a bachelor's degree in social work.
ASU-Mountain Home – Hunter Lakin Woods of Bryant.He plans to earn his associate's degree and then transfer to Henderson State University to earn a bachelor's degree in human health and performance.
ASU-Newport – Cassidy Chrestman-Powers of Harrisburg; She plans to earn an Associate in Liberal Arts degree and transfer to A-State University to pursue a career as a nurse.
Lemony Whitelaw, ASU Mid-South-West Memphis; She plans to earn her associate's degree in elementary education and transfer to A-State to earn her bachelor's degree in elementary education.
ASU Three Rivers – Elizabeth Brenna Michael of Magnet Cove; She plans to earn an associate degree in general studies and transfer to A-State to continue her studies in health care.
“We are thrilled to recognize our first group of Welch Presidential Scholars,” said Interim System Chancellor Robin Myers. “These scholars are incredible individuals who embody academic excellence and service on our two-year campuses. We are pleased that they have chosen to continue their education at Arkansas State University and Henderson College, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.”
