Justin Timberlake isn't the first celebrity to be arrested in the Hamptons
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. — EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Justin Timberlake isn't the first celebrity to be arrested in the Hamptons. The coastal community on the eastern end of Long Island is popular with the rich and famous, many of whom have had their share of car-related trouble. Here are some examples.
Billy Joel
Singer Billy Joel and Long Island fishermen from the East Hampton Fishermen's Association were accused of illegally catching striped bass during a protest against fishing regulations in July 1992. The charges were later dropped. The plight of the fishermen, whose livelihoods were threatened by the regulations, inspired Joel's song “The Downeaster 'Alexa'”.
Then in January 2003, Joel ran off the road and crashed his Mercedes into a tree in Sag Harbor. He was hospitalized but not arrested.
Martha Stewart
A landscaper working for real estate mogul Harry Macklowe accused TV personality and home-business entrepreneur Martha Stewart of intentionally backing into his car in May 1997 during a feud between Macklowe and Stewart, their East Hampton neighbors. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office investigated but decided not to charge Stewart. “Not every event that adversely affects a person's life deserves to be prosecuted in a criminal trial,” District Attorney James Catterson said at the time.
“PR Princess” Lizzy Grubman
Lizzy Grubman, a publicist to the stars whose clients included Britney Spears and Jay-Z, was asked by a Southampton security guard to move her Mercedes out of a fire lane on July 7, 2001. Grubman complied, backing her car into a crowd, injuring 16 people. Grubman was charged with second-degree assault, DUI and reckless endangerment. She faced up to eight years in prison but struck a plea deal that resulted in her serving 38 days in jail and serving five years probation.
Jason Kidd
Jason Kidd, a basketball Hall of Famer and coach of the Dallas Mavericks, who lost to the Boston Celtics in Monday's NBA Finals, crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a light pole in Southampton in July 2012. Kidd pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drunk driving charge and was placed on probation. In exchange for pleading guilty, Kidd agreed to speak to high school students on Long Island about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Brian France
Former NASCAR CEO Brian France was arrested in Sag Harbor in August 2018 on suspicion of DUI and illegal possession of oxycodone. Police say France was driving a Lexus and was observed running a stop sign. France pleaded guilty to DUI and was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and undergo alcohol counseling.
