College Hill: Celebrity Edition Season 3 continued the tradition of its predecessors, captivating viewers from the get-go. The first episode of the show not only introduced the new cast of this season's Xavier University of Louisiana, but also teased upcoming storylines, most notably the antics of Saucey Santana and Karlus Miller.
Saucy Santana's blatant disregard for the show's premise of celebrities attending HBCUs for an education, and Carol Miller's stance on homelessness, sparked a debate about college behavior. College Hill: Celebrity EditionI don't like the behavior of these two celebrities and it looks like this is going to be a trend throughout the entire season.
Karl Miller's claims about homelessness are now completely moot
In episode one, I agreed with Carras' opening assertion that we need to elect leaders who can effectively address issues like homelessness. I disagree that this issue is not a concern for the average citizen of our city or state. We can all contribute by advocating and taking action to address this issue. I felt the class was creating a promising discussion that would challenge the cast and spark thought-provoking debate among the series' viewers.
However, at the beginning of the second episode, Karlas added a lot of unnecessary weight to his position that I don't agree with at all. Downplaying addiction as a disease is despicable and shows that he has no intention of truly doing what is necessary to address the issue. Later in the episode, we also saw Nick talking to Karlas about his personal connection to homelessness, which is directly related to his brother's mental health issues. Karlas still He acted as if he didn't understand what was going on.
Carlos' behavior in this episode made me sick. He is entitled to his opinion, and just because he disagreed with someone once doesn't make him hopeless or unworthy of favor, but the way he behaved when he disagreed with Dr. Fraser and his co-stars was not appropriate for a college environment.
The next day, when the cast returned to class, Carlos tried to pick a fight with Nick Young (whether jokingly or seriously) by being rude to Dr. Frasier, and Nick continued to belittle his intelligence because of their different positions on the issue. Carlos has no intellectual or moral position here. He argues that ordinary citizens cannot fight homelessness, that the responsibility for making change rests on those in power. Yet his class assignments give him and his peers the power to influence policies that politicians may enact as law. The class itself is counter to his position.
Carlos is getting away with things that a non-celebrity college student would never be able to do. If Carlos wasn't a nationally famous comedian, Dr. Fraser would have kicked him out of his class. Carlos was aggressive, which is the worst type of student to deal with at any educational level. And that's the big problem I have with him. College Hill: Celebrity Edition.
The double-edged sword of having a celebrity student
I'm so glad College Hill is back for this one, it's a really fun, touching moment, well-produced show that I think does a good job of showcasing the academic and social experience of an HBCU to people who haven't been directly involved with it.
But involving celebrities can sometimes help as much as it hurts. College Hill: Celebrity Edition makes the point that age doesn't matter when it comes to getting an education. But is one too famous to get an education? Why should Karlas find common ground on the issue of homelessness if she's only on the show to be on it? Why should Saucy Santana take the issue so seriously and even attend classes if she intends to continue being Saucy Santana after filming of the show ends?
I understand that at the end of the day, this is an entertainment piece and it does a good job of drawing viewers in and keeping them watching. But why would any celebrity who doesn't actually put in the effort to gain qualifications in interdisciplinary studies appear on this show? There are so many other ways to earn money and fame, why waste their time here?
And it's clear that Saucy Santana is wasting her time on this show.
Would Saucy Santana like to be on the show?
College Hill: Celebrity Edition has aired three seasons to date. All seasons are available on BET+, and the first two seasons aired on BET's cable channel a few months after the season was released on streaming. This is not a new show where celebrities don't know what to expect. It's not a reality TV show or a game show. This is a show about celebrities who get into an HBCU as non-traditional students.
I don't understand why some of the people on this show have a hard time grasping that concept. Yes, college is hard and the studying may seem overwhelming, but this is what you signed up for. I don't understand why a celebrity like Santana wouldn't focus and do what it takes. Santana was terrible in episode 1, but episode 2 took her disrespect for the entire process to a new level.
Claudia Jordan and Karl Miller were wrong to hide his toy doll. They should not have touched his belongings without permission. But skipping school because you can't find your toy doll is the height of petulance. There's no other way to cut it. It may be funny to some, but not to me. It's embarrassing and, frankly, a waste of time.
Saucy Santana is a popular artist, influencer and performer with fans across the country. He doesn't need the checks or the relevance that comes with being on College Hill. So why is he here? And the real question we have to ask through two episodes is if he's here to stay. Throughout the two seasons, we've seen Ray J, Amber Rose and Joseline Hernandez suffer real consequences for their actions on the show. Ray J didn't graduate from Texas Southern University and had to return to finish his work at Alabama State University, while Amber Rose and Joseline Hernandez were expelled for altercations.
There's no telling what will happen next for Saucy Santana, but there is a precedent for what will happen next if no changes are made.
Beef brewing?
In the next episode, it looks like Saucy Santana will find out that it was Claudia and Carlous who hid the toy doll. This situation could develop further as Saucy and Claudia already resolved their dispute in the first episode. Meanwhile, Carlous is as aggressive as ever and Saucy Santana completely sneaks out of the house and shows up at the club. I don't think it will go well, but we'll see what happens…
