The couple who caused a bisexual panic by appearing in the movie “Bi-D” FlashdanceTaylor and Iman Shumpert, known for the theme music video for Kanye West's 2016 song “Fade,” are splitting up for good. According to documents obtained by TMZ, a judge has ordered Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert to file a written divorce settlement by noon on June 27. The judge wants to put an end to Taylor and Shumpert's constant bickering over issues like a parenting plan and child support supplement. If the couple can't come to an agreement by the deadline, the judge has promised to remove the case from the court docket, meaning the couple will have to start the process over again. The news comes after a lengthy divorce proceeding that was first filed in January 2023 and wasn't made public until late last year. Here's everything you need to know.
Taylor quietly filed for divorce from former basketball player Shumpert in January 2023, citing “cruel treatment.” She kept her filing secret for 10 months until reporters heard rumors of the divorce in November of last year. Taylor announced her separation in September. In court documents, Taylor claims the marriage fell apart because Shumpert was jealous of her fame, became anxious when photographers asked him to step out of the frame to take her picture, and felt unworthy.
According to TMZ, Shumpert eventually “treated her cruelly throughout much of their marriage and began to display extreme narcissistic behavior,” the suit alleges, adding that Shumpert “emotionally and mentally” abused Taylor. He “didn't want her to work” when she became a mother, but complained about not having a job when she stayed home to raise their two children. According to the documents, Taylor tried to reconcile with Shumpert as her NBA career was falling apart, but was unable to make amends. She filed for divorce once in 2022, then asked her attorneys to withdraw the filing the next day. Shumpert's cheating scandal and arrest for DUI and marijuana possession made the situation worse. His attorney denied the allegations of cruel treatment and asked that the grounds for divorce be changed to “irreparably broken bonds.”
According to June documents, Shumpert asked the court to adjust his child support amount to $8,000 a month, taking into account his monthly income of about $48,000. Daily MailTaylor also claimed she made about $94,000 a month in income, but accused Shumpert of withdrawing nearly $4 million from their joint bank account and using it to cover a $200,000 home renovation bill.
Taylor denied TMZ's reporting on Shumpert's behavior, saying the article had a “misleading headline.” “My court documents are not clickbait for your salacious headlines,” she wrote in an Instagram Story on Jan. 27. In January filings obtained by TMZ, Taylor accused Shumpert of smoking marijuana and smoking marijuana while he was with her daughters. Taylor also claimed Shumpert withheld food from her daughters when she left them in care and once used a ride-sharing app to send them to Chicago's United Center arena alone. While Shumpert allegedly put her children at risk, he also allegedly shut off utilities at her Georgia home, leaving Taylor without Wi-Fi, cable or water. “I would also like to add,” Taylor wrote. “The day after that shit happened, all utilities at my house were shut off!! Me and my children are definitely not an easy target!!!”
“Hey @tmz are you serious????” Taylor wrote. “Y'all have gone too far with these damn misleading headlines and I'm sick of it! Every time I turn around it's either a half leaked fabricated story or something twisted for clickbait! I have politely asked you motherfuckers to please not interfere with my work and respect my family's privacy,” she continued. “But you keep saying your shit. If you're going to keep leaking my papers then show me the whole thing and get it right!!! Stop taking bits and pieces and making 2 into 10!” Taylor explained that reports like this are why she filed for divorce in secret, using only her initials, in the first place.
