In the 177-run run chase, South Africa started poorly as Bumrah swept away Reeza Hendricks and Arshdeep had captain Aiden Markram caught, but Tristan Stubbs and Quinton de Kock fought back for India, along with Heinrich Klaassen.
Klaassen smashed a massive six off a Kuldeep Yadav delivery through extra cover to help the Proteas reach the 100-run milestone in 11.3 overs.
Miller eased off the pressure but then Pandya came on and helped India score 52 runs off 27 balls with the crucial wicket of Klaassen, but Pandya's over gave India a brief respite without a boundary and they had to defend 22 runs with three overs remaining.
Jansen was shut out by Bumrah, leaving the Proteas needing 16 off the last six balls. Hardik bowled the final over and took the big wicket of Miller before Suryakumar Yadav took a brilliant catch on the boundary line. With Rabada finally out, South Africa were on 169/8 and India had won a tight match by seven runs.
