2024 US Presidential Election Poll: A recent CNN poll shows that Vice President Kamala Harris is more likely to win the US presidential elections scheduled for November than President Joe Biden. Biden's approval rating is 81%, but it has dropped significantly since his poor performance in last week's debate with Donald Trump in Atlanta. Since the debate, there has been growing support within the Democratic Party for Biden to step aside and for another candidate to take the lead for the crucial elections on November 5th.
A CNN poll conducted by SRS showed Trump leading Biden by six points.
Polls also suggest that Harris could challenge Trump in a theoretical matchup, with 47% of registered voters backing him and 45% backing Harris — a result within the margin of error and suggesting there is no clear front-runner in such a scenario.
The poll noted that “Harris' slight advantage over Trump was due in part to broad support among women (50% prefer Harris to Trump, 44% prefer Biden to Trump) and independents (43% support Harris, 34% support Biden).”
Biden blamed his poor debate performance on fatigue from global travel.
Joe Biden, speaking without a teleprompter at a campaign event in Virginia on Tuesday night, acknowledged his disappointing debate performance and blamed it on lack of sleep. He said his campaign has raised $38 million since the debate.
“I made a mistake. Before the debate, I traveled around the world several times, across about 100 time zones. I didn't listen to my staff, and then I came back and nearly fell asleep onstage,” Biden admitted. “That's not an excuse, but it's an explanation.”
Democrats and political strategists say it will be largely Biden's own decision whether to continue running for president in 2024, after his underwhelming performance in the debates with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
But Biden is facing increasing pressure, with some donors urging him to pull out and other Democrats openly questioning whether he can beat Trump in November.
A House Democratic aide said 25 House Democrats were preparing to call for Biden's resignation, while another aide said moderate Democrats in battleground states were considering airing their concerns directly to Biden after facing tough questioning from their constituents this week.
“Opinions appear to be shifting,” the source said.
After the debate, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed one in three Democrats thought Biden should end his reelection campaign.
Biden's verbal gaffes and sometimes incoherent responses during the debate have raised concerns.
