Two women have accused Sandman author Neil Gaiman of sexual assault.
Gaiman rose to fame as the author of the DC Comics fantasy series “The Sandman,” which ran from 1989 to 1996. His work continued to explore religion, mythology and magic in books such as “American Gods” and “Good Omens.”
All three of these books have been adapted into TV shows, with Netflix's The Sandman having a second season in the works.
The Tortoise Media podcast, “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman,” which was released on July 3, features allegations from two women who say Gaiman sexually assaulted them in 2005 and 2022.
The first victim, who asked to remain anonymous and only identified herself as K, said she began a sexual relationship with Gaiman in 2005 when she was 20 years old.
Here's the timeline of the allegations:
2005: K begins dating Gaiman.
The fourth episode of the podcast explains that K met Gaiman at a book signing in Florida in 2003 when she was 18, and the two began dating two years later.
Ms K told Tortoise Media that she and Gaiman engaged in “rough and painful sex” that she “did not want or enjoy”.
She also alleged that Gaiman had sex with her while she was infected, “despite her asking him to stop.”
February 2022: Gaiman begins dating a woman from New Zealand.
The second and third episodes of the podcast are about 23-year-old nanny Scarlett, who claims she began a sexual relationship with Gaiman just hours after they first met at his home in New Zealand in February 2022.
Scarlett claims that Gaiman assaulted her in the bathroom that day, but that they then had consensual sex.
“Mr Gaiman engaged in violent and vulgar penetrative sexual acts with her,” Scarlett told Tortoise Media.
She also said that during one incident, “the pain was heavenly” but he wouldn't stop when she asked him to.
“He laughed, said I needed to be punished and hit me with a belt,” Scarlett alleged.
July 2024: Gaiman denies the allegations and says both incidents were “consensual.”
Tortoise Media carried Gaiman's statement, saying: “He denies any misconduct with K and is troubled by her allegations.”
The statement continues: “Although he believes K's allegations are born out of regret for her relationship and that Scarlett suffered from a condition associated with false memories at the time of her relationship with him, this allegation is not supported by her medical records or medical history.”
Gaiman told Tortoise Media that during the alleged incident with Scarlett in 2022, “the two simply engaged in 'cuddling' and 'cuddling' in the bath and this was consensual.”
“His contention is that during their subsequent sexual relationship over the next three weeks they engaged in consensual finger penetration only.”
A representative for Neil Gaiman did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
