Jennifer Lopez may be following in the footsteps of Britney Spears, Drew Barrymore and, more recently, Jennifer Lopez's daughter-in-law, Violet Affleck. On Wednesday, Page Six published paparazzi photos of the 54-year-old walking the streets of New York City in a white crop top that read, “JLO BE MY MAMA.” Of course, if this was a normal day, the tabloids would be happy to forgive Jennifer Lopez for wearing a crop top. But alas, with rumors swirling about a marital scare between Jennifer Lopez and her Y2K beau Ben Affleck, the publication is now saying that the crop top is “[ing] A message.” Naturally, they didn’t tell us what the message was. Oh no!
But Page Six pointed out that Lopez paired the mystery T-shirt with $620 Acne Studios jeans and a $5,200 Lady Dior bag by DiOriviera. Very cool, but unhelpful. If I had to guess, I'd guess she's giving a shout-out to the queer community, hoping her new fans will call her “mother” at a time when she really needs their support and goodwill.
As you may recall, earlier this week, a gossip magazine reported that Lopez and Affleck's marriage had actually been over for “several months” — apparently since March, according to anonymous sources. Or maybe Jennifer Lopez is using the crop top to make a point about her remarriage to Ben. Maybe he suffers from Peter Pan syndrome and dating him felt like a motherf*cker (unfortunately, not an uncommon experience for American wives). My third, final, and most likely hypothesis is that she just loves crop tops. Said of today Earlier this year, she said at the show that she wanted to feel sexy. If I had abs like hers, I'd be wearing a crop top in New York City too. Jennifer Lopez, you are you!
